Awards, distinctions and honours

External organizations regularly pay tribute to the achievements of National Bank and its subsidiaries and the competency of their employees. The following is a list of awards, distinctions and honours presented to the Bank and members of its personnel:

2010

February 2010 – Canadian Lipper Fund Awards
Three National Bank Securities investment solutions stand out at the annual Lipper Fund Awards.
Honoured at the Canadian Lipper Fund Awards:

  • National Bank Income and Growth Managed Portfolio
  • National Bank Monthly Moderate Income Fund
  • Altamira Global Small Company Fund

The three investment solutions posted superior risk-adjusted performances relative to their peers.

2009

September 2009 - top 50 investment funds available in Quebec
Five National Bank Financial Group mutual funds ranked among the best
Five mutual funds offered by National Bank Securities Inc. have earned a spot on the first list of the top 50 investment funds available in Quebec, published in the September issue of Affaires Plus magazine. These five funds are listed below and the first three are managed by Natcan Investment Management Inc.:

  • National Bank Mortgage Fund
  • National Bank Dividend Fund
  • National Bank Small Capitalization Fund
  • Omega Preferred Equity Fund
  • Meritage Balanced Portfolio

The selections were based on four criteria: long-term fund performance, the fund’s portfolio manager, risk/return ratio and fund accessibility for investors.

July 2009 -– “Top 1000 World Banks 2009”
National Bank Financial Group ranked 136th

National Bank Financial Group again recorded a strong showing with a ranking of 136th on the prestigious list of “Top 1000 World Banks” produced annually by The Banker magazine. This benchmark list ranks financial institutions throughout the world based on their strength and stability. Its main yardstick measures capital strength in millions of dollars based on Tier 1 capital at the end of the most recent fiscal year. This year, National Bank Financial Group improved its ranking significantly, jumping from 159th to 136th place in 2009.

July 2009 – Commerce magazine’s 500 largest companies
National Bank Financial Group ranked 12th in Quebec and 43rd in Canada

National Bank Financial Group was among the 500 largest companies in Quebec and Canada
in an annual review published by French-language business magazine Commerce. The Bank was ranked the 12th largest company in Quebec and 43th largest in Canada. The criteria used to determine rankings included the number of employees and the company’s total revenues, assets and earnings.

May 2009 – Hydro-Québec ENERGY WISE Competition
National Bank Financial Group honoured

During the awards ceremony for the ENERGY WISE Competition of Excellence, National Bank Financial Group was honoured for being one of the five businesses with the most projects in connection with the 2008 Empower Program. In fact, eleven branches were targeted for a project to improve their energy profile, resulting in a savings of 485,000 KWh.

April 2009 – Canadian Lipper Fund Awards

National Bank Financial Group picked up top honours for eight of its mutual funds that excelled in delivering consistently strong risk-adjusted performance relative to peers. Here are the funds that were honoured:

March 2009 – Commerce magazine’s 150 most admired companies in Quebec
National Bank Financial Group in 105th place

According to a Léger Marketing survey published in Commerce magazine, National Bank Financial Group ranked 105th among the 150 most admired companies in Quebec.

February 2009 – Finance et Investissement magazine’s top 25 in the financial industry
Louis Vachon the 6th most respected executive
Finance et Investissement magazine
spotlighted the top 25 executives in Quebec’s financial industry at the gala for the financial personality of the year. For the fifth consecutive year, Louis Vachon, President and Chief Executive Officer, ranked 6th on the prestigious top 25 list.

January 2009 - 2008 Ted Rogers Award for Innovation
National Bank Financial Group receives an award
National Bank Financial Group received the 2008 Ted Rogers Award fo Innovation in magazine content. The award recognized the quality of the information presented in the French-language Guide financier, a publication for physicians and pharmacist produced in partnership with the Financial Group and distributed through Actualité médicale and Actualité pharmaceutique.

50 Best Employers in Canada
National Bank ranked among the best employers for a 5th consecutive year

National Bank is particularly proud to be named to the list of the "50 Best Employers in Canada" for a 5th consecutive year. This list, compiled annually by Hewitt Associates in collaboration with Report on Business magazine and the daily La Presse, recognizes companies with human resources practices that strengthen employee commitment and engagement. The award is based on a survey of employees, business leaders and human resources professionals from the participating organizations.

2008 Grands Prix québécois de la qualité
National Bank’s Customer Relations Centres honoured
National Bank Financial Group is proud to have garnered an honourable mention at the 2008 Grands Prix québécois de la qualité in the large service company category.
The mention was awarded more specifically for the Group’s Customer Relations Centres, call centres where close to 700 employees answer clients’ questions concerning all the different products and services offered by the Financial Group. Presented by the Mouvement québécois de la qualité, the Grands Prix québécois de la qualité recognize and highlight the work of private companies and public organizations that strive for excellence. Awarded in accordance with stringent criteria comparable to those for such internationally renowned awards as the Deming prize in Japan, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in the United States and the European Quality Award, these distinctions are presented each year by the Premier of Quebec. The Mouvement québécois de la qualité is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to contribute to the improvement of its member oganizations’ performance by facilitating the evaluation and integration of best management practices.

Once again, the Bank has been included among the 500 largest companies in Quebec and Canada in an annual review published by French-language business magazine Commerce. The Bank was ranked the 9th largest company in Quebec and 55th largest in Canada. The criteria used to determine rankings included the number of employees and the company’s total revenues, assets and earnings.

Distribution of structured products: the Bank stands out
Structured Products magazine’s 2008 American Awards for Excellence
The Bank's Financial Product Solutions Group received the Canada Distributor Award as part of the 2008 American Awards for Excellence from Structured Products magazine, an international monthly publication that is well-known in the derivatives products business. The National Bank team was recognized for showing the most innovation in building and distributing structured products. The Bank's winning growth strategy is supplemented by a continuing education program given coast to coast to all our investment dealers.

Clément Gignac to lead the
Association des économistes québécois (ASDEQ)
Clément Gignac, Chief Economist of National Bank and Senior Vice-President and Strategist at National Bank Financial, was named President of the Association des économistes québécois (ASDEQ), an organization with more than 700 members. By appointing him to lead this professional association through 2008-2009, his peers recognized his expertise and his reputation as National Bank Financial Group’s official spokesperson on economic matters. What’s more, his team is regularly ranked among the top three teams of economists in Canada according to the Brendan Wood International annual survey of Canadian fund managers. Created in 1975, the ASDEQ is a professional association dedicated to developing and disseminating economic knowledge, enhancing the status of economists in society and promoting their contribution as credible and sought-after spokespersons. The organization addresses the most common workplace and business concerns while maintaining close relationships with academia.

NBDB named the most improved online broker by Surviscor
Based on a mid-year evaluation of online brokers by consulting firm Surviscor, French-language business publication Les Affaires highlighted the dramatic improvement made by NBDB in the past year. NBDB now ranks 4th out of 16 in the Investor category, which accounts for close to 99% of direct brokerage clients, up four places from its summer 2007 results. According to Surviscor, a number of strengths helped NBDB climb up the rankings, including the presentation of account information, market intelligence tools, a fee structure adapted to different types of investors and prompt replies to e-mails.

Independent research firm recognizes National Bank’s website
National Bank has distinguished itself by posting the best improvement in the rankings of the 2008 Canadian Bank Secure Site and the 2008 Canadian Bank Public Web Site, issued by Forrester, an independent research firm. [details]

2008 Lipper Fund Awards ceremony

National Bank is proud to announce that two of its subsidiaries, National Bank Securities and Altamira Investment Services, earned top honours at the 2008 Lipper Fund Awards ceremony on April 2. The Lipper Fund Awards program highlights funds that have excelled in delivering consistently strong risk-adjusted performance, relative to their peers. The Lipper Fund Awards are awarded to funds in 21 countries in Asia, Europe, and North America.

March 2008 - 150 most admired companies in Quebec
Commerce Magazine
National Bank fared very well in a Léger Marketing survey of the 150 most admired companies in Quebec, which was published in the March issue of the French-language business magazine Commerce. The survey, which was conducted between mid-December and early January, ranked the Bank 39th this year, compared to 77th last year. In a year marked by many challenges, these survey results show that our ongoing commitment to the clients and the communities we serve has not gone unnoticed. We can all be proud of this, especially considering the important role we play in Quebec. The Bank is not the only financial institution that bettered its position in 2008. In general, Quebecers appear to have a more positive view of banks than they did a year ago.

February 2008 - Quebec’s financial industry executives / Top 25
Finance et Investissement Magazine

The February issue of the French-language business magazine Finance et Investissement spotlighted the top 25 executives in Quebec’s financial industry and profiled the financial advisors who were honoured at the gala for the financial personality of the year. For the fourth consecutive year, Louis Vachon, President and Chief Executive Officer, and Charles Guay, Senior Vice-President – Wealth Management, were among the executives on the prestigious top 25 list. In addition, three out of the four advisors honoured by the publication are members of the National Bank team! Louis Paquet, Vice-President of the National Bank Financial branch in Quebec City, was named financial advisor emeritus in recognition of his long and distinguished career. Ginette Fortin, Manager – Wealth Management in the Mauricie, Bois-Francs and Sorel region, was designated as the advisor most involved in her community. André Charest, Vice-President and Assistant Manager at the National Bank Financial branch at Place Ville-Marie in Montreal, was one of the two advisors who tied for the title of advisor most respected by his peers.

December 2007 - 50 Best Employers
National Bank among the ranking for a fourth consecutive year
National Bank is proud to announce it has been named to the list of the "50 Best Employers in Canada" for a fourth consecutive year in 2008. The Bank placed 41st overall, up from its ranking of 46th in 2007. The Bank was also 9th among Quebec-based companies on the list. The list, compiled annually by Hewitt Associates, recognizes companies with innovative and engaging human resources practices.

November 2007 -Women's Executive Network
Two National Bank officers honoured by Women's Executive Network
Gisèle Desrochers, Senior Vice-President – Human Resources and Corporate Affairs, and Patricia Curadeau-Grou, Executive Vice-President – Finance, Risk and Treasury have been named to the Women’s Executive Network Hall of Fame of Canada’s most influential women on November 21, 2007. They received this honour after having have made the list of Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 for the third time for their commitment, leadership skills and contribution to achieving the Bank’s results. Both women were selected in the Corporate Executive category, which recognizes female executives holding senior positions in private and public companies in Canada. Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 is an initiative of the Women’s Executive Network, an organization dedicated to the advancement and recognition of female executives. The program celebrates Canada’s most accomplished women in their respective fields.

Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada
The National Bank Tower was named "the Office Building of the Year" (TOBY) by the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada during the Association’s prestigious awards gala held on September 19 in Toronto. The TOBY award recognizes excellence in the Canadian commercial real estate industry in terms of property management, operations and environmental awareness.

June 2007 - The 500 largest companies in Quebec and Canada
Annual rankings by Commerce magazine
According to Commercemagazine's annual rankings of the 500 largest companies in Quebec and Canada, published in its June 2007 issue, National Bank is the 8th largest employer in Quebec and the 55th largest employer in Canada. The Bank also ranks 18th among the 20 largest financial institutions in Canada in terms of revenue and is the 6th largest Canadian bank in terms of assets.

June 2007 - Quebec Awards for Citizenship
National Bank receives the Maurice Pollack Award

National Bank received the Maurice Pollack Award in the "private sector enterprises or organizations" category as part of the 9th edition of the Quebec Awards for Citizenship. Yolande James, Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities, presented the awards at the Quebec Parliament Building on June 18. The Maurice Pollack Award highlights the efforts of businesses that support equal access to employment for Quebecers from cultural communities and visible minorities and the adaptation of services in the workplace.

June 2007 - 2007 OCTAS award / Fédération de l'informatique du Québec
National Bank honoured in the Business Solutions category

At a special gala held on Saturday, June 2, National Bank won the 2007 OCTAS award in the Business Solutions category for its Management of Client Opportunities (MCO) platform. Used by Financial Advisors throughout National Bank’s branch network, this application provides a comprehensive profile of each client, allowing for more efficient and personalized service. The MCO application has not only improved client satisfaction, it has enabled National Bank to save more than 120 tons of paper, the equivalent of more than 2,700 trees, per year.
The OCTAS contest, organized by the Fédération de l’informatique du Québec, is the largest IT event in Quebec.

May 2007 – BOMA Awards Gala
The National Bank of Canada Tower Tops in the Real Estate Market
On May 31, 2007, the
Association of Building Owners and Managers in Quebec (BOMA Québec) gave The Building of the Year (TOBY) Award in the Corporate Facility category to the National Bank Tower. The TOBY Awards salute the stars of the commercial real estate industry, recognizing excellence in, among other things, property management, operations, resource conservation and environmental awareness. They are the most prestigious awards in commercial real estate in North America.

Three officers among Quebec’s top 25
In February, the French-language business magazine Finance et Investissement spotlighted the top 25 executives in Quebec’s financial industry. Three Bank officers made the list: Réal Raymond, President and Chief Executive Officer, Louis Vachon, Chief Operating Officer, and Charles Guay, President and Chief Executive Officer at Altamira and National Bank Securities. The selection committee highlighted the impressive achievements of young Quebec financial executives in 2006.

Exclusive survey conducted by Léger Marketing for Commerce magazine
According to the 10th edition of the Léger Marketing survey conducted for Commercemagazine and published in March 2007, National Bank is the 66th most admired company in Quebec. The Bank came in 4th in the "Banks and Financial Institutions" category. The results of the Léger Marketing survey, which presents the 150 most admired companies in Quebec, has been featured in Commerce magazine for the past 10 years. The Bank has made the list for the last 5 years.

For the third year in a row, National Bank has been named to the list of Canada’s 50 best employers. This ranking recognizes companies with innovative and engaging human resources practices. The list was compiled based on a survey of employees, managers and human resources professionals from the participating organizations. The "50 Best Employers in Canada" survey is conducted annually by Hewitt Associates in partnership with The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business magazine and the French-language daily La Presse.

November 2006 – John Molson School of Business / Awards of Distinction
Alice Keung recognized by John Molson School of Business

On November 21, Alice Keung, Senior Vice-President – Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, received an Award of Distinction from Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business to underscore her successful business career, close ties with her alma mater and commitment to the community.
For the past 19 years, Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business has given Awards of Distinction to members of the business community who have achieved significant professional success while demonstrating a high level of community involvement.

November 2006 Women’s Executive Network, Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100
Gisèle Desrochers and Patricia Curadeau among the most powerful women in Canada
Also in November, Gisèle Desrochers, Senior Vice-President – Human Resources and Operations, and Patricia Curadeau-Grou, Senior Vice-President – Risk Management, both members of the Bank’s Executive Committee, made the list of Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 in the Corporate Executives category. Their commitment, leadership skills and contribution to achieving the Bank’s results are the key elements that set them apart from other candidates. An initiative of the Women’s Executive Network, Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 celebrates Canada’s most accomplished women in their respective fields.

October 2006 – Canada’s All-Star Execs from Canadian Business magazine
Michel Tremblay chosen as Top in Sales
Mr. Tremblay, Senior Vice-President – Personal Banking and Wealth Management at National Bank has been chosen by Canadian Business magazine as Canada’s Top Sales manager. For the past five years, this magazine has selected Canada’s top six executives in the following categories: Top CEO, Most Innovative CEO, Top CFO, Top in Operations, Top CIO et Top in
Sales. Selection is based on research conducted by a panel of financial experts on the performance of companies on the S&P/TSX composite index and their senior executives. Michel Tremblay was recognized primarily for the quality of his leadership, his sense of innovation and his contribution to the achievement of the Bank’s results.

Commerce magazine ranked the Bank 6th among the 500 largest companies in Quebec and placed it in 62nd position among the 500 largest companies in Canada. The Bank also came in 17th place among the 20 largest financial institutions in Canada and was ranked the 6th largest bank in the country.

June 2006 "Canada’s biggest companies ranked: The Top 1000"
By The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine
The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine ranked the Bank 34th among the 1000 most profitable businesses in Canada and 6th among Canadian banking institutions. National Bank Financial, a Bank subsidiary, also came in 6th place in the Investment Dealers category. In addition, the Bank was ranked 37th among the 50 biggest employers in Canada.

Réal Raymond selected personality of the week

In its Sunday, March 12, 2006 edition, La Presse named Réal Raymond as its personality of the week. He received this honour, in particular, in recognition of the Bank’s return of 25.1% for fiscal 2005, which was announced at the annual meeting of shareholders last week. According to La Presse, Mr. Raymond deserves much of the credit for this achievement as the Bank has posted consistently strong results since his appointment as CEO in 2002.

Exclusive survey conducted by Léger Marketing for Commerce magazine
For the fourth consecutive year, National Bank has been listed among the 150 most admired companies in Quebec, according to Léger Marketing’s ninth annual survey for the French-language magazine Commerce. The results appear in the March issue.
The Bank was ranked 48th, the same position it held in 2005, with the second-best showing among financial institutions. For the past nine years, Commerce magazine has been highlighting the findings of the Léger Marketing survey, which presents the 150 most admired companies in Quebec.

December 2005 – 50 Best Employers in Canada
An Hewitt Associates Study

For the second year running, National Bank has made the prestigious list of the "50 Best Employers in Canada." The list, which is drawn up every year, recognizes companies with innovative and engaging human resource practices. It is based on a survey of employees, officers and human resource professionals at participating organizations. The survey is conducted annually by Hewitt Associates in partnership with The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business magazine and the French-language daily La Presse.

Réal Raymond nominated
Réal Raymond, President and Chief Executive Officer, was named "CEO of the Year" in the survey conducted by Montreal daily La Presse. Since Mr. Raymond was first nominated in the spring of 2002, the Bank has delivered consistently strong performance – just one of the reasons that made Mr. Raymond such an impressive candidate for the title this year. This honour reflects on all employees, who have contributed to the Bank’s success, not to mention our clients and shareholders. The article on Mr. Raymond in La Presse spoke not only of his accomplishments, but of his personal qualities as well.

November 2005 — "Flèche d’or" prize
Contest organized by Montreal’s Relational Marketing Association
The ad campaign and promotion for the Allure MasterCard was awarded the prestigious Flèche d’or prize in the 15th edition of the contest, organized by the Relational Marketing Association. Recognized primarily for having led a relational marketing campaign that sets it apart from its competitors for its creativity and integrated media approach, National Bank took home a Flèche d’or in the "Financial products and services" category.

October 2005 –Globe and Mail list of Canada’s top corporate boards
Recognition from The Globe and Mail
In a Globe and Mail survey of Canada’s corporate boards, National Bank ranked 36th out of the 209 companies rated. The results, released in October, were based on the following criteria: board composition and director compensation, disclosure of information, shareholder rights and each company’s 5-year performance record.

October 2005 – Prix Professionnel Émérite CRHA/CRIA
Awarded by the Ordre des CHRA et CRIA du Québec
Gisèle Desrochers, Senior Vice-President – Human Resources and Operations was awarded the title of Professionnel émérite by the Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines et en relations industrielles agréée du Québec. It is a prestigious and honorary award given to a member of the Ordre who, by his or her achievements in human resource management and industrial relations, contributes to the advancement of the profession and serves as a model for his or her peers.

August 2005 – Top 25 Boards in Canada
Honour bestowed
by Canadian Business
The Bank took 9th spot in the 2005 "Top 25 Boards in Canada." This ranking recognizes boards that stand out for the accountability and independence of directors, disclosure and returns over the past three years. Canadian Business is a semi-monthly magazine devoted to business in Canada.

June 2005 – Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada
Prize awarded by the magazine Corporate Knights

National Bank ranked 15th in the 2005 list of Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada, which recognizes those companies that are best living up to their civil foundation responsibilities. Corporate Knights is a magazine committed to promoting corporate social responsibility.

May 2005 – ARISTA Contest
Prize awarded by Jeune Chambre de commerce de Montréal (JCCM)

Charles Guay, President and Chief Executive Officer of National Bank Securities, President and Chief Executive Officer of Altamira, and Senior Vice-President – Mutual Funds, took top honours in the Young Manager in Quebec category of the Arista competition, organized by the Jeune chambre de commerce de Montréal. Through this competition, the Arista competition pays tribute to the talent and success of young managers, professionals, self-employed workers and entrepreneurs, between the ages of 18 and 40, working in all regions and sectors of economic activity in Quebec.


May 2005 – Top 40 under 40
Prize awarded by The Caldwell Partners
Charles Guay, President and Chief Executive Officer of National Bank Securities, President and Chief Executive Officer of Altamira, and Senior Vice-President – Mutual Funds,was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40. The Top 40 Under 40 program was created to pay tribute to the men and women who have become exceptional leaders in their respective fields before turning 40. The Caldwell Partners is a firm renowned for the quality of its expertise in recruiting executives.

February 2005 –Korn/Ferry-Revue Commerce Awards for corporate governance
Korn/Ferry Award
National Bank earned the 2004 Korn/Ferry-Revue Commerce Award for excellence in corporate governance in the Large Company category. These awards are given to companies that have put in place rules and practices that go beyond what is required by existing corporate governance standards.

February 2005 – National Bank Discount Brokerage
Kudos from Dalbar
National Bank Discount Brokerage (NBDB) distinguished itself among Canadian discount brokers for the excellence of its customer service, earning the inaugural annual Discount Brokerage Service Award. Dalbar, a research firm specializing in the financial services industry, evaluated the performance of financial institutions using several criteria such as customer satisfaction, service quality and the effectiveness of communications.

January 2005 – National Bank ranks among the "50 Best Employers in Canada" in Hewitt Associates Study
The Bank placed 40th among the "50 Best Employers in Canada" a study conducted annually by Hewitt Associates in partnership with Report on Business magazine and La Presse. The rankings include organizations of all sizes from different business sectors across Canada and are based on employee opinion surveys.


2004

June 2004 – OCTAS Gala
Prize awarded by the Fédération de l'informatique du Québec
The Bank received the OCTAS award in the "Business Solutions (201+ employees)" category for the excellence of its "Invest and Grow" project, designed to enhance service to credit card holders and prevent fraud. The Fédération de l'informatique du Québec brings together some 2,500 professionals from more than 1,100 businesses, and is the largest network of professionals and other workers in the information technology and communications sector in Quebec.

February 2004 – National Bank Discount Brokerage
Recognition from Dalbar
In 2004, the Bank took top honours among Canadian discount brokerages for the excellence of its customer service at National Bank Discount Brokerage (NBDB). Dalbar is a research firm that specializes in financial services. It measures the performance of financial institutions on a number of levels, such as customer satisfaction, service quality and effectiveness of communications.

November 2004 – Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100
Honour granted by the Women's Executive Network
