New deadline for cheque compliance: September 2, 2008

The new cheque specifications are now in effect. All businesses ordering new cheques should ensure that they meet the new specifications.

Businesses that have not yet updated their cheques are strongly encouraged to do so in preparation for the transition to the new imaged clearing process.

The deadline for cheque conversion to the new specifications has been postponed to September 2, 2008. This extended transition period, or "grace period," will allow businesses that are still working on the changes to use up their existing supply of cheques and implement any required updates to software.

To help our business clients make a smooth transition, National Bank will continue to process "old format" business cheques until implementation of the new clearing process begins in the latter part of 2008.

Adapt your cheques now!

Do you order your cheques through National Bank?
You can continue to use your current supply of cheques without having them tested.
Any cheques printed by our supplier since April 2005 meet the new specifications. However, if your current cheques were printed before April 2005, you'll have to order a new supply.

Do you order your cheques from an outside supplier or print them yourself? You’ll need to have your cheques tested by National Bank free of charge.
Before you submit them to us, please ensure that:

  • Your supplier has taken the necessary steps to adjust your cheques to the new specifications; OR
  • Your internal systems have been updated to meet the new specifications.

Take the test!

We’ll take care of checking that the changes made to your cheques are in line with the new specifications. Simply give 10 void cheques (including one printed by your accounting software, if possible) to your Manager – Commercial Banking or the personnel at your branch.
