National Bank accounts can now be opened online

Montreal, 4 November 2003 - 

The National Bank now lets consumers apply for a bank account via its web site www.nbc.ca.

Consumers can quickly and easily choose the type of account and main features (e.g. banking package, returned cheques, account handling, etc.) directly from the Bank's web site. Once the application has been submitted, future account holders are asked to go to a branch to confirm their identity in accordance with legal requirements.

Applicants who already have an account with the National Bank are not required to go to a branch. They will receive a telephone call from an advisor informing them that their account has been opened and ready for the first transaction.

"This service adds to our existing offering of website services," stated Jean Blouin, Vice-President, Retail Credit and Investment Solutions. "What's more, the process is flexible since applicants can open an account whenever they want. And because the National Bank adheres to the most stringent security standards, it's also very safe," Mr. Blouin added.

This service has been available since November 1, 2003 to Canadian residents who have reached the age of majority.
