National Bank awards three bursaries to students in Îles-de-la-Madeleine
Montreal, 7 August 2007 -
National Bank and the Fondation Madeli-Aide proudly presented bursaries of $1,500 each to three students in Îles-de-la-Madeleine during a special evening held in their honour at the recreation centre in l'Étang-du-Nord yesterday. This financial support will help them pursue their post-secondary studies in programs offered only outside their region.
$100,000 donation from National Bank
These bursaries, which were awarded to students in Îles-de-la-Madeleine by the Fondation Madeli-Aide, are part of a $100,000 donation from National Bank. Over a period of 10 years, the Bank will grant some 70 bursaries of $1,500 each to young people who are eager to continue their education and contribute to the socio-economic development of their region. National Bank is proud to lend its support to these ambitious students.
Thanks to this investment by National Bank in the education of young people in Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Véronique Chiasson will be able to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Université de Montréal, Guy-Olivier Deveau will work on a Master’s degree in philosophy at Université Laval, and Maxime Aucoin will begin studies for his Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at Université de Moncton. Additional bursaries will be awarded in the coming years.
In 2006, the Bank and its subsidiaries, through corporate donations, sponsorships, in-branch fundraising activities and various benefit events, gave $19.5 million to hundreds of Canadian education, health care, cultural and community organizations.

About Fondation Madeli-Aide
The Fondation Madeli-Aide was created in 1997 in order to provide financial support in the form of bursaries to young people in Îles-de-la-Madeleine for whom pursuing a higher education is a significant challenge. Many residents of Îles de la Madeleine must pursue their post-secondary education elsewhere because their program of study is not offered in the region. In fact, close to 50% of students do not complete secondary school. These bursaries therefore help promote education and lower the school dropout rate in the region.
