JOB TIPS

Make a living

There's a French saying: “Le travail, c'est la santé” – work is health. If you share this belief and have decided to try your luck on the job market, there are many steps to take before you get that first paycheque. Let's get down to work!

Your CV, ASAP

Your curriculum vitæ is your calling card. It helps you get your foot in the door of potential employers. That's why you should take tremendous care to prepare it properly.

A few important points that the experts will tell you to keep in mind: it should not be longer than two pages, it should contain the most recent information, and it should be written with honesty, clarity and concision. Another key item is the accompanying cover letter: tailor it to each recipient, making sure to include a personal touch.

Start the search!

Finding employment that you're interested in can be a full-time job in itself. One thing is certain: you have to first decide on the type of job and employer you would like to have. By defining your goals this way, you can increase your chances of success.

Scanning the job ads is the next logical step. Although newspapers are still a good place to begin, don't forget the Internet. Sites like Emploi Québec and Placement Étudiant du Québec can be extremely valuable.

Websites of recruitment firms are another good starting point. Be sure to bookmark the following addresses :

You may also want to check out the websites of corporations that you would like to work for. Most are constantly on the lookout for people and post job offers online.

Finally, don't forget to tell people around you that you are on the job hunt. The more contacts you have, the better your chances of being hired.
