Cultivating Relationships with the Community

National Bank cultivates close relationships with the communities it serves in order to promote diversity. It’s another way of demonstrating our social commitment!

Bursary and Summer Employment Program

Since 1989, National Bank has offered the Michel-Houle bursary and summer job program for post-secondary students with physical and sensory disabilities. The aim of the program is to help these young people continue their studies while gaining relevant work experience. The program also strengthens our culture of inclusion and openness. National Bank is the only Canadian financial institution that actively promotes the integration of young people with disabilities into the workforce through such a program. This is only one of the Bank’s many social commitments. To date we have awarded over $115,000 in bursaries and provided over 26,775 hours of work. Several bursary recipients have gone on to make a career for themselves at the Bank.

Haitian Junior Chamber of Commerce

For a number of years now, National Bank Financial Group has been involved in the Entrepreneurship and Leadership Day organized by the Haitian Junior Chamber of Commerce (JCCH). This event brings together current and future entrepreneurs aged 18 to 40 from the Haitian community from a number of employment sectors. During the event, National Bank account managers hold a workshop on how to make a good impression on your banker.

At its Excellence Gala held March 13th 2010, Yolande James then Quebec Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities presented National Bank Financial Group with the JCCH diversity award for its practice of promoting diversity within our organization.

The diversity award is presented to the company that sets itself apart through inclusive human resources practices and also by the number of employees from cultural communities and their positions within that organization. The company's commitment to the Haitian community is another criterion that is considered by the jury.

The employment equity for the disabled business network

National Bank Financial Group is a founding member of this network, which is coordinated by the Centre d'adaptation de la main-d'œuvre pour personnes handicapées. This network was created to help businesses share and develop their expertise in attracting and retaining disabled employees who meet their staffing needs.

The business representatives involved in developing the network believe in the importance of giving prospective candidates access to quality employment opportunities that are in line with the abilities and interests and proactively implementing measures to attract, retain and engage them as employees.
