Three Tips For Being a Clever Communicator

We use negotiation skills every day, sometimes without even realizing it. Whether we’re hammering out a contract with a client, arranging delivery times with a supplier, discussing overtime with an employee, choosing a restaurant with our spouse or setting a curfew for our teenager, our lives are filled with negotiations. Here are three useful tips from the workshop that can help make you a better negotiator.

1- A “win-lose” style will affect you on three levels

When you conduct negotiations with no intention of compromising and seek to win at all costs, there are three ways it will affect you:

  • Physical: This style requires a lot of energy, so you’ll feel tired more quickly.
  • Emotional: Your relationship with the other person will be negatively impacted.
  • Intellectual: Instead of really listening to the other person, you’re formulating your response. Since you’re not truly present, you’re likely to make mistakes.

2- If you’re always on the losing end, you’ll eventually leave

We live in a world where there is almost too much choice. If you aren’t getting what you need from your current provider, you can always go somewhere else. This means that if you constantly win negotiations at the client’s expense, your relationship is going to deteriorate. Sooner or later, your client will go elsewhere.

3- A “win-win” negotiation style opens the door to new opportunities

When you seek a compromise that allows both parties to win, you make room for new opportunities. When two people truly work towards a compromise, they adopt a positive state of mind that fosters creativity. They’ll be able to explore possibilities and find a win-win solution that benefits both parties.
