The National Bank publishes its second public accountability statement on its commitment to the community

Montreal, 2 March 2004 -

The National Bank today announced the publication of its public accountability statement on its commitment to the community for fiscal 2003. The 2003 Social Responsibility Report presents concrete examples of the Bank's contribution to the development and well-being of the communities it serves. This report covers topics such as the Bank's involvement in the community, its promotion of diversity, management of its human resources, its focus on customer service, its contribution to the economy and its corporate governance.

"Our role goes beyond that of an effective financial intermediary and leading player in economic development," stated Réal Raymond, President and Chief Executive Officer of National Bank of Canada. "We also have a responsibility to contribute to social cohesion, which is fundamental to enhancing personal and collective well-being and to achieving economic progress."

In 2003, the National Bank donated some $10 million to foundations and community organizations through its donation and sponsorship programs, fundraising campaigns in branches and philanthropic activities organized by its employees and subsidiaries across Canada.
