National Bank announces a $500,000 donation to University of Moncton during visit to New Brunswick

Moncton, New Brunswick, 30 September 2004 -

The Board of Directors of National Bank met today in the small coastal town of Bouctouche to mark the 400th anniversary of Acadia.  The President and Chief Executive Office of the Bank, Réal Raymond, took advantage of the occasion to announce a $500,000 donation to University of Moncton, one of the largest donations to a Canadian university in the Bank's history.

Extremely proud to be making the announcement during the 400th anniversary of Acadia, Mr. Raymond paid tribute to University of Moncton, which he described as “one of the most important institutions in Acadia and a beacon for the francophonie in Eastern Canada.”  Mr. Raymond reminded those present that University of Moncton and National Bank both shared the same vision, namely, to serve and promote the French-speaking community in Atlantic Canada.

“The National Bank of Canada has been a faithful partner since the creation of our institution 40 years ago,” said Yvon Fontaine, president of the Université de Moncton.  “We are very grateful for this new contribution which expresses once again the bank's strong commitment to the development of our institution,” he added. The university is presently conducting a fund raising campaign – the Excellence campaign – to raise 25M$.

Holding Board meetings outside the Montreal head office has become a tradition for directors of National Bank, who welcome the opportunity to feel the pulse of the communities served by the Bank and strengthen their bonds with customers and employees.  These meetings, which are held at least once a year, have already taken the Board to Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Quebec City and a number of other Canadian cities.

National Bank has 28 branches in New Brunswick, where it has been present for almost a century, and about 300 employees. Throughout the province, National Bank is known especially for its services to individuals and SMEs, as well as for its contributions to the community. For instance, in addition to its donation to University of Moncton, National Bank also supports charitable organizations such as the Fondation de l'Hôpital régional d'Edmundston, the Fondation de l'Hôpital Dr. Georges-L. Dumont, the Moncton YMCA, the Foyer Notre-Dame de Saint-Léonard and countless other community and cultural organizations across New Brunswick.
