The Bank awards close to $6,000 in bursaries to the National Bank Défi sportif Champions

Montreal, 11 January 2007 -

Proud to be renewing its commitment to Défi sportif for a fifth consecutive year, National Bank awarded close to $6,000 in bursaries to the National Bank Champions yesterday during the official opening of the annual event.

Défi sportif inspires such values as performance, diversity and integration, all of which are embraced by the Bank,” explained Sylvie Roy, Vice-President – Marketing and Public Affairs, who, with her colleague David Pinsonneault, Vice-President – Commercial Banking at National Bank and honorary chair of the 2007 Défi sportif financing campaign, was pleased to present the bursaries to 16 athletes.

“Becoming a National Bank Champion gives you the opportunity to showcase your athletic talent and share your passion with the general public. This visibility gives you a chance to promote your sport and demonstrate that unstinting effort and determination pay off,” Ms. Roy told the Champions.

National Bank Champions are selected as ambassadors of their disciplines and the Défi based on their athletic ability, communication skills, spirit and drive, as well as their ability to set new limits and excel through sport.

“A Champion takes the task of promoting his sport to heart and leads by example, both in competition and in daily life,” say Pierre Mainville, a National Bank Champion in 2006 and 2007.

The 24th edition of the Défi sportif will be bringing together over 2,900 athletes to Montreal from April 25 to 29, 2007. This major sports event is presented by Hydro-Québec and organized by AlterGo, a Montreal-based organization whose mission is to promote the social integration of people with disabilities.
