Enhanced Security - F.A.Q.

1 - Electronic Solutions Enhanced Security

1.1 What is Enhanced Security?

Enhanced Security is an additional security measure established by the National Bank of Canada when accessing the Internet Banking Solutions. It allows you to register your computers and link them to your user code. When you open a session from a computer that has not been registered, the system will ask that you confirm your identity by answering one of the three personal identification questions that you created in your profile. This assures us that you are the one accessing your own file.

1.2 How does the Enhanced Security feature work? / How do you recognize my workstation?

When a session is opened, the system will ask if you wish to register your computer to your user code so that we may recognize you the next time a session is opened.

If you choose to register your computer, a recognition cookie containing a unique identifier is created for your computer and linked to your user code. Each time a session is opened, your browser will send that cookie to our system in order to ensure that you are using your own computer. If the workstation (computer) is recognized, the session will continue as usual.

However, if you choose to not register your computer, no recognition cookie will be generated and you will be required to answer one of the three personal identification questions in your profile, in addition to entering your user code and password, every time you log on.

1.3 Do my personal identification questions replace my user code and password?

No, your user code and password remain the key to your online access and must still be entered in order to open a session in the Internet Banking Solutions for businesses.

1.4 What do I do if I don’t remember the answers to my personal identification questions?

If you are the Service administrator, please contact our customer service at 1-844-394-4494, options 2-3, Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. (ET). A representative will confirm your identity, reset your questions/answers and provide you with a new password.

You will then be able to choose new personal identification questions upon accessing your online banking file.

1.5 I did not correctly answer my personal identification questions and my access has been suspended. What do I do?

Once your computer is registered, you will need to provide only your user code and password as usual.

No, the National Bank of Canada has always adhered to the strictest standards of security, such as our 128-bit encryption - currently the highest available commercially in North America. The Enhanced Security feature is an extra level of security, like a second lock protecting your online accounts.

1.10 Does the Enhanced Security feature protect against phishing, viruses and other computer threats?

No, the Enhanced Security feature is an additional protection when opening a session on the National Bank of Canada’s site, the Internet Banking Solutions for businesses. The Enhanced Security feature does not, however, discharge the National Bank of Canada or the user of their online banking protection and security responsibilities. 1.11 What are recognition cookies?

A recognition cookie is information sent to your computer from a website. For the Enhanced Security feature, the National Bank of Canada sends secured information to your computer when your workstation has been registered to your user code. It contains a unique identifier that will enable us to identify you when a session is opened. Each time a new session is opened from your computer, your browser will return that cookie as a security measure so that we can confirm that you are using your own computer.

[Top]

1.12 Can I register several workstations?

Yes, several workstations can be registered. Be sure to register only your own workstations since they will be linked to your user code. This way, we can ensure that the session is being opened from a computer belonging to you.

1.13 If I own a laptop computer, will my workstation/computer be recognized regardless of the connection I use?

Yes, the Enhanced Security feature will recognize your computer regardless of where the connection is made.

1.15 Why must I input a new password once my personal identification questions have been reset?
