What is a trust?

A trust is a mechanism whereby one person (the settlor) transfers assets to another person (the trustee) for the benefit of a third person (the beneficiary or beneficiaries), while imposing certain restrictions and conditions on the assets. The trust property is held and administered by the trustee on behalf of the beneficiaries as directed by the settler.
